The Essential Bar Book Review: Hot Buttered Rum Recipe & Tips

I don’t know why I haven’t reviewed cookbooks or food-related books here before, especially given my love for them. Welcome to a new kind of post on Cake ‘n’ Knife!

When I received The Essential Bar Book: An A-to-Z Guide to Spirits, Cocktails, and Wine with 115 Recipes for the World’s Greatest Drinks, I eagerly opened it to help me stock my home bar — which, embarrassingly, lives in two cardboard boxes. Almost immediately I was pulled into a rich resource covering virtually every topic connected to alcohol. The book’s compact size makes it perfect to keep on a shelf or near your bar, and its clear, friendly tone makes it an excellent reference for beginners and more experienced home bartenders alike.

What I appreciated most was the voice of the book. Open to an entry like “Madeira” and you don’t just get a dry definition: you learn where it comes from, how it’s aged, how it tastes, and how it’s used. That blend of history and tasting notes elevates the book beyond a simple glossary into a mini-education on spirits and wines.

But the informative entries are just part of the package. The Essential Bar Book also covers ingredients, preparation techniques, barware, and practical recipes so you can apply what you learn. It strikes a comfortable balance between background information and usable recipes, often sprinkled with anecdotes and a light sense of humor that keeps the reader engaged.

One recipe I couldn’t resist trying is the book’s Hot Buttered Rum. As the book cheekily asks, “Is there anything sexier than a glass of melted butter mixed with warm golden spirits?” The answer, for me, is no. The Hot Buttered Rum is warm and velvety, with a richness from butter and ice cream and just enough spice to make each sip comforting and memorable. It’s the kind of cozy cocktail that’s perfect for cold evenings and holiday gatherings. I highly recommend the book; it’s a smart and enjoyable addition to any collection.

I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review.

The Essential Bar Book Hot Buttered Rum

Is there anything sexier than a glass of melted butter mixed with warm golden spirits? Gout be damned, this hot lipid–laden drink is a cold-weather panacea that resulted from colonial New Englanders’ penchant for putting rum in everything. Americans have been whipping up a spiced butter batter and dousing it with rum and hot water since before they were Americans. This fancified version, created at the Boston cocktail bar the Hawthorne, brings the winter warmer to its full velvety potential with the crucial addition of ice cream and black tea.
