A bright, refreshing cocktail that bridges winter and spring: a honey grapefruit martini made with vodka (or gin), fresh grapefruit and tangerine juice, orange liqueur, and honey simple syrup.

I usually reach for whiskey, but this time I experimented with vodka and fresh citrus. Grapefruit and tangerine season makes this the perfect light, lively cocktail to transition into warmer days.
Grapefruit can be tart and slightly bitter, so I balance it with honey simple syrup and a touch of sweet, fragrant tangerine juice. The result is bright, smooth, and very drinkable.
Grapefruit Vodka Martini
While a classic martini uses gin and dry vermouth, the term now covers a range of stirred or shaken cocktails served in a martini or coupe glass. This honey grapefruit martini works equally well with vodka or gin—choose what you prefer.
Serve it chilled in a martini glass or a coupe for the best presentation.

Recommended Bar Tools
- Boston shaker and a fine strainer
- Measuring jigger or a small measuring shot glass — accurate measurements make balanced cocktails
- Y-peeler for citrus twists or peels
- Citrus juicer — fresh-squeezed juice elevates the flavor far above bottled alternatives
Liquor Options and Substitutes
Vodka or Gin: This martini is flexible. If you prefer vodka, choose a clean, smooth brand; if using gin, opt for one with gentle botanicals so it doesn’t overpower the citrus.
Orange Liqueur: Grand Marnier or Cointreau are both excellent choices and add depth and orange aroma.
Fruit Juices: Fresh grapefruit juice and tangerine juice are ideal. If tangerines aren’t available, fresh orange juice works well. More tangerine or orange juice will add sweetness to counter grapefruit’s bitterness; use all grapefruit juice if you want a tarter drink.

Notes
- Vodka can be swapped for gin if you prefer.

- If tangerine juice is unavailable, fresh orange juice is an excellent substitute.
- Adjust the ratio of tangerine/orange to grapefruit juice to control sweetness versus tartness.
