This is our best tips and guide for using Genie+ at Animal Kingdom. Use this to help plan your Animal Kingdom day.
What is Genie+
Genie+ is the paid upgrade to Disney’s free Genie day-planning tool in the My Disney Experience app. With Genie+ you can purchase Lightning Lane access for a selection of rides and attractions to shorten your wait times.
Rules for Genie+
- You can only select one Lightning Lane reservation at a time. After you use that reservation or the return window begins, you can book another.
- An exception applies when booking more than two hours in advance: you may make another selection once the two-hour window elapses or two hours after the park opens if booking in the morning.
- You can only take the next available return time offered by the system; you cannot choose a custom time.
Purchasing Genie+
Genie+ becomes available to buy in the My Disney Experience app at 7:00 AM Eastern for the day of your visit. Pricing varies by date and by park. Park Hopper Genie+ options and peak dates typically cost more. Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are often among the higher-priced parks.
What Rides Are Not Included on Genie+ at Animal Kingdom?
Most Animal Kingdom attractions are available through Genie+, but Avatar Flight of Passage is not included. Flight of Passage uses the individual Lightning Lane system and requires a separate purchase to access its Lightning Lane.
Individual Lightning Lanes at Animal Kingdom
Individual Lightning Lanes are sold separately from Genie+ for the most in-demand attractions. At Animal Kingdom the primary individual Lightning Lane is:
- Avatar Flight of Passage
Resort guests can purchase this individual Lightning Lane at 7:00 AM on the day of their visit. Other guests can purchase once the park opens. If Flight of Passage is a priority, try to buy its Lightning Lane as early as possible.
Do I Really Need a Lightning Lane for Flight of Passage?
Flight of Passage frequently posts very long standby waits—often 90 to 120 minutes and sometimes longer. Much of the queue is shaded or indoors, which helps with comfort, but if you prefer minimal waits, the individual Lightning Lane is recommended. You do not need Genie+ to purchase an individual Lightning Lane for Flight of Passage.
Animal Kingdom Genie+ Priorities
Because you can hold only one Genie+ reservation at a time, prioritize the most popular attractions early before their Lightning Lanes fill. If you are staying on property, set an alarm for 6:45 AM so you’re ready at 7:00 to buy Individual Lightning Lanes (if needed) and Genie+ selections.
Recommended priorities (fast-closing and high-demand experiences):
- Kilimanjaro Safaris: Morning safaris give the best animal viewing. This attraction also tends to close earlier than others, so an early Lightning Lane is valuable.
- Na’vi River Journey: A family-friendly Pandora experience that fills up quickly due to the popularity of the land.
- Adventure Outpost Meet & Greet: Meeting Mickey and Minnie together is a popular stop and can have long waits.
- Expedition Everest: A fan-favorite coaster that can accumulate long lines, especially later in the day.
- Dinosaur: A high-intensity dark ride that often has steady waits throughout the day.
- Kali River Rapids: Especially popular in hot weather, this water ride draws large crowds in summer months.
Genie+ Day at Animal Kingdom — Sample Plan
Disney reports that guests average two to three Lightning Lane experiences per day, but with careful planning you can often complete more. Below is a sample itinerary that aims for maximum Lightning Lane value while enjoying Animal Kingdom sights.
Sample day:
- Wake up before 6:45 AM if you are a resort guest so you can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes and Genie+ at 7:00 AM.
- At 7:00 AM, buy a Flight of Passage individual Lightning Lane if that’s a priority. Then select your first Genie+ Lightning Lane—we recommend Kilimanjaro Safaris first.
- Enter the park at rope drop (park often opens around 8:00 AM) and head toward your Kilimanjaro Safaris window. If you have time, grab a quick breakfast at Kusafiri Coffee Shop + Bakery.
- After tapping into Safari, book your next Genie+ selection while you wait for your return window to begin.
- Next targets: Expedition Everest or Kali River Rapids depending on weather and preference. While in the area, schedule a meet-and-greet with Mickey and Minnie at Adventure Outpost if desired.
- Plan for shows like Finding Nemo — The Musical or Festival of the Lion King as standalone experiences; you often don’t need Genie+ for these if you arrive about 15 minutes before showtime.
- Later in the day, check return windows for Na’vi River Journey and aim for an evening time slot. Consider dinner at Satu’li Canteen in Pandora and, if you didn’t ride Flight of Passage earlier, try to get in line about an hour before park closing if that fits your plan.
Is Genie+ at Animal Kingdom Worth It?
Animal Kingdom tends to be the park where Genie+ is least essential compared with other parks, since its lineup of must-have Lightning Lanes is smaller and Flight of Passage is sold separately. Depending on daily Genie+ pricing, it can sometimes be more cost-effective to purchase just the individual Lightning Lanes you want instead of the full Genie+ upgrade.
During peak seasons or busy days, Genie+ becomes more valuable. If you prefer to skip Genie+, consider rope-dropping popular attractions or staying late to ride before closing to avoid long standby lines.
Does Genie+ Sell Out for Animal Kingdom?
Genie+ availability at Animal Kingdom is less likely to sell out than at the busier parks, but it can happen on peak days. Decide the day before if you want Genie+ and have a plan for early purchasing if it matters for your priorities.
