I adore baked sweet potato fries — they rank high on my comfort-food list. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, and perfect when loaded with flavorful toppings.

This is my first dedicated sweet potato fries post on the site, and I’m excited to share a recipe that turns them into a complete, satisfying meal. With taco-seasoned ground turkey, a bright lettuce-tomato-avocado salsa, and a creamy tahini drizzle, these fries feel indulgent but stay wholesome.

Loaded Baked Sweet Potato Fries — healthy comfort food

This dish pairs crispy oven-baked sweet potato fries with seasoned turkey, a fresh, chunky salsa, and a nutty tahini sauce. It’s hearty, nutritious, and perfect for nights when you want something satisfying without the guilt.

It does require a bit of prep — cutting sweet potatoes into matchsticks and arranging them so they roast rather than steam — and the oven time is around 30–40 minutes depending on your oven. But the results are worth the effort: golden, crisp fries and a flavorful, balanced meal.

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Fries

  • 1.7 lbs (800 g) sweet potatoes — about 4 small or 2 medium (small, straight potatoes are easier to cut)
  • ½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • ¼ tsp sea salt

Taco Meat

  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 small garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ onion (white or yellow), chopped
  • ½ lb (250 g) ground turkey (or extra-lean ground beef or chicken)
  • ⅛ tsp chili powder
  • ¼ tsp ground cumin
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ cup chicken broth

Salsa

  • 2 cups chopped lettuce (heaping cup; iceberg works well)
  • 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes
  • ½ avocado, chopped
  • 1 scallion, white and green parts chopped (use 2 if small)

Tahini Sauce

  • 1 ½ tbsp tahini (ground sesame seeds)
  • 1 ½ tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Sea salt, to taste

Instructions

Sweet Potato Fries

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C (430°F). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Rinse sweet potatoes under cold water and pat dry, leaving the skin on.
  3. Cut long potatoes in half crosswise. Slice into lengthwise planks, then rotate and cut into sticks.
  4. Place sticks in a large bowl. Toss with olive oil, sweet paprika and sea salt until evenly coated.
  5. Arrange fries in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they don’t overlap so they roast instead of steam.
  6. Bake 15–20 minutes until starting to brown, flip, then bake another 7–10 minutes until golden and crisp. If edges burn before they’re cooked through, reduce oven to 200°C (400°F).
  7. Remove from oven and keep warm while you finish the other components.

Taco Meat

  1. While fries bake, heat 1 tsp olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and cook until translucent and fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add ground turkey, chili powder, cumin and a pinch of salt. Cook until the meat is no longer pink on the outside, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Stir in tomato paste and chicken broth. Cook 2–3 minutes until liquid reduces and meat is cooked through. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.

Salsa

  1. Combine chopped lettuce, quartered cherry tomatoes, chopped avocado, and scallion in a bowl. Toss gently and set aside.

Tahini Sauce

  1. Whisk tahini, water, lemon juice and garlic powder in a small bowl until smooth. Season with sea salt to taste.

Assemble

  1. Divide sweet potato fries among plates. Top with taco turkey, spoon over the salsa, and drizzle with tahini sauce. Serve immediately.
